چکیده

We consider truncated SVD (or spectral cut-off, projection) estimators for a prototypical statistical inverse problem in dimension D. Since calculating the singular value decomposition (SVD) only for the largest singular values is much less costly than the full SVD, our aim is to select a data-driven truncation level m̂ ∈ {1, . . . , D} only based on the knowledge of the first m̂ singular values and vectors. We analyse in detail whether sequential early stopping rules of this type can preserve statistical optimality. Information-constrained lower bounds and matching upper bounds for a residual based stopping rule are provided, which give a clear picture in which situation optimal sequential adaptation is feasible. Finally, a hybrid two-step approach is proposed which allows for classical oracle inequalities while considerably reducing numerical complexity.

Estimation in inverse problems and second-generation wavelets

We consider the problem of recovering a function f when we receive a blurred (by a linear operator) and noisy version: Yε = Kf + εẆ . We will have as guides 2 famous examples of such inverse problems: the deconvolution and the Wicksell problem. The direct problem (K is the identity) isolates the denoising operation. It cannot be solved unless accepting to estimate a smoothed version of f : for ...

Dynamical systems gradient method for solving ill-conditioned linear algebraic systems

A version of the Dynamic Systems Method for solving ill-conditioned linear algebraic systems is studied in this paper. An a priori and a posteriori stopping rules are justified. Algorithms for computing the solution in the case when SVD of the lefthand side matrix is available is presented. Numerical results show that when SVD of the left-hand side matrix is available or not computationally exp...

Near-Optimal Spectral Filtering and Error Estimation for Solving Ill-Posed Problems

We consider regularization methods for numerical solution of linear illposed problems, in particular, image deblurring, when the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the operator is available. We assume that the noise-free problem satisfies the discrete Picard condition and define the Picard parameter, the index beyond which the data, expressed in the coordinate system of the SVD, are dominate...

On Truncated-SVD-like Sparse Solutions to Least-Squares Problems of Arbitrary Dimensions

We describe two algorithms for computing a sparse solution to a least-squares problem where the coefficient matrix can have arbitrary dimensions. We show that the solution vector obtained by our algorithms is close to the solution vector obtained via the truncated SVD approach.
